Strawberry Wine – Many Strawberry wines are “strawberry flavored”. Our wine is made from true 100% strawberries.
The history of this wine is kind of funny. Grandpa would never have Ginna make strawberry preserves from any strawberry but a Missouri one. Missouri strawberries are smaller than others, but the natural sugar content is higher, they are red all the way through and not red on the outside, white in the middle. They are some of the best tasting and good looking for preserves. A produce man was selling to us and said he had frozen 40 lbs of MO strawberries, I had not had any at all in four years and wanted to make preserves. I was going out of town to LA and told him to bring them to the girls but I cautioned him not to sell us anything other than MO product because I would k now the difference. When we returned, I took one look in the freezer only to see non-MO strawberries, they would have made really ugly preserves because the color was poor and so I asked Wayne if he wanted to use them to make wine or if I should pitch them. He made 10 gallons of strawberry wine.
The following year, we purchased strawberries from Bess farms in southern MO. The girls hand cut and crushed 300 lbs of strawberries every Monday for a month often working until 1 or 2 am. This is truly a hand made MO product.
It is a sweet wine that is about 13.8% alcohol (an accident because the natural sugar was higher than we anticipated) and we have discovered, it is an even better wine after about six months to a year in the bottle. |
